Quotes by American Presidents

Updated on March 12, 2013

The White House

The White House has served as a symbol of the American people, the United States government, and a home for the Presidents of the past two hundred years. An Act of Congress was signed by President George Washington in December of 1790 stating that the federal government would settle in a district "not exceeding ten miles square…on the river Potomac." Construction began on the site where the White House still stands today in October of 1792.

President Washington supervised the construction of the house, yet he never lived there. President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, were the first to live in the White House. From President Adams until today, the White House has been the private home to our nations leaders during their terms in office.
