Is Your Pet Fat?

Obesity and Pet Health

Not only are a large portion of Americans obese, so are their pets. Pets lounge around and snack just as their owners do, if they are allowed. They watch television and nap with their owners, as well as eat the same types of junk food. They also lack the physical activity (just like their owners) that is needed to stay healthy.

Outdoor dogs and cats tend to get more exercise since they are free to roam around. Indoor animals tend to eat more due to boredom and being stuck inside all day long with nothing to do but eat. Fancy dog and cat treats, table scraps, and lack of exercise are all life shortening for our beloved pets. Overweight pets suffer from diseases just as overweight humans do. Cardiac and respiratory illnesses are more common as well as arthritis and joint problems in obese dogs and cats.

Is Your Pet Fat?

Checking for obesity in animals is relatively simple. Cats should be sleek and fit with no noticeable belly fat or fat in their hips. Feeling of a cat is the easiest way to find any excess weight. Dogs are considered overweight if the ribs can't be palpated (felt), ribs should be barely visible on the surface of the skin.

A veterinarian should be consulted before starting any type of diet regimen for a dog or cat to ensure that your pet receives the proper nutrients while dieting. Make sure that all family members are aware of the diet changes taking place, and that they help keep the pet on the recommended diet plan.

Smaller Portions

Pets should eat smaller meals more often, they shouldn't be fed excessively large meals once or twice daily as is the norm. Eliminate treats, snacks, and especially table scraps. Pet treats contain high fat and calorie content. Owners must learn how not to give in to begging and sad eyes. The amount of food should be weighed so that the pet receives the appropriate amount of food.

Monitor Weight Loss

Rapid weight loss can cause liver damage and be life threatening for animals so they must be monitored closely for any rapid loss of weight while dieting. Exercise is an important part of the weight loss regimen. A responsible pet owner needs to be sure that any pets receive enough exercise. Brisk walks, several times a day, usually suffice. Catnip balls or other cat and mouse play is the best way for cats to get the exercise they need.

Weight loss for a pet can take a long time if not done properly, because they did not get fat overnight. Animals that are overweight tend to have more problems than those who maintain a healthy weight. For the longevity of those fun four-legged friends owners need to take responsibility for the diets of their cats and dogs.
